blood

Every day, lives are changed in an instant by serious motor vehicle crashes. I’ve often thought about those first few hours after my serious crash. While survivors may not remember what happened, trauma teams do. They remember the rush to stop the bleeding, stabilize broken bodies, and perform life-saving surgeries.  While first responders, trauma teams, and surgeons work tirelessly to save those who have been critically injured, there is one life-saving resource they cannot provide without the help of others: blood.  For many crash survivors, donated blood is the difference between life and death.

Why Blood Donations Matter

Severe motor vehicle crashes often result in significant blood loss. Victims may require multiple blood transfusions during emergency surgery, throughout their hospital stay, and sometimes during additional surgeries in the weeks that follow.  Unlike many medical supplies, blood cannot be manufactured. It can only come from generous individuals who choose to donate.

A Race Against Time

When a critically injured person arrives at a trauma centre, every second counts. Emergency physicians and trauma surgeons rely on an adequate blood supply to stabilize patients while they repair life-threatening injuries.  Without enough blood available, even the best medical teams face greater challenges.  This is why maintaining a strong community blood supply is so important. Hospitals never know when the next major crash will occur.

Crash Survivors Know the Importance

Many crash survivors owe their lives to strangers they will never meet.  Some remember waking up days later to learn they had received several units of blood. Others never knew how close they came to losing their lives until their family shared the details.  Behind every successful transfusion is someone who took an hour out of their day to donate.  That simple decision created another chance at life.

Who Can Donate?

If you’re healthy and meet the eligibility requirements, donating blood is one of the easiest ways to make a meaningful difference in someone else’s life.  The process is safe, relatively quick, and could help save someone who is experiencing the worst day of their life.  Even if you have never donated before, your first appointment could become the gift that gives someone another birthday, another anniversary, or another chance to watch their children grow up.

You May Never Know Whose Life You Saved

Crash survivors often say they wish they could thank every person who helped save them.  From the 911 dispatcher and paramedics to the emergency physicians, nurses, surgeons, and rehabilitation teams.  Blood donors are part of that team.  While you may never meet the person whose life you helped save, your generosity becomes part of their recovery story.

A Small Gift with a Lasting Impact

Recovery after a serious motor vehicle crash can take months or even years. For some, it is a lifelong journey. But none of that recovery would be possible without surviving those critical first hours.  Donating blood is one of the simplest acts of kindness you can offer.  Maybe you’ve never needed a blood transfusion. I hope you never do. But if you’ve ever known someone who has survived a serious crash, chances are blood donors played a big role in their story.  When we hear about a devastating collision on the news, we often think about the police officers, firefighters, paramedics, nurses, and surgeons who respond. They are true heroes.  But there are other heroes too.  The person who took an hour out of their day to donate blood.  The college student who rolled up their sleeve between classes.  The retiree who makes donating part of their routine.  The neighbour who decided they could help someone they would never meet.  They may never know the family they saved from unimaginable heartbreak.

As a survivor of a horrific motor vehicle crash caused by a distracted driver, I understand how fragile life can be. Recovery doesn’t begin in a rehabilitation clinic or during physiotherapy.  It begins in the trauma room.  It begins when doctors have the blood they need to keep someone alive. Many survivors go on to spend months or years rebuilding their lives. They learn to walk again, return to work, cope with chronic pain, manage invisible injuries, or simply find a new normal.  None of those victories would have been possible without surviving that first day.

Greateful for Blood Donors

Summer is often one of the busiest seasons on our roads. Families travel, motorcycles fill the highways, cyclists enjoy the warm weather, and communities gather for outdoor events. Unfortunately, trauma centres often see an increase in serious injuries while blood donations tend to decrease because people are busy with vacations and summer plans.  The need doesn’t stop just because it’s summer.  Neither should our willingness to help.  You may never meet the person whose life your donation saves.  You may never hear their story.  But somewhere, a parent may get to watch their child grow up.  A spouse may get more years with the person they love.  A family may be spared the unimaginable pain of saying goodbye too soon.

Thank you to every blood donor for helping give crash survivors the chance to write the next chapter of their story.
