Recovering from a motor vehicle crash is a vulnerable time — physically, emotionally, and financially. Whether you’re in the hospital, a rehabilitation centre or at home, your primary focus should be on healing. But during this time, it’s not uncommon to receive unexpected calls from people claiming to “help” and not all of them are who they seem. You’re dealing with injuries, trauma, confusion and in some cases, heavy medication. During this time, your focus should be on rest and recovery. Unfortunately, that’s also when some people may try to take advantage of the situation.
What We’ve Heard from Crash Survivors
Over the past few months, we’ve spoken to numerous crash survivors, and troubling patterns have emerged:
- Hospitals flooded with business cards. Many survivors report waking up in trauma hospital rooms to find stacks of law firm business cards at their bedside — left without consent or context.
- Unsolicited phone calls to hospital rooms. Some victims recall receiving direct phone calls from lawyers or “representatives” while they are a patient in a trauma room, offering help, pushing legal services, or pressuring them to sign with them.
- Medication and confusion exploited. One recent caller shared that she couldn’t remember whether she signed with a lawyer or not as she was heavily medicated at the time and unsure if she had verbally agreed to anything.
These aren’t isolated incidents. They highlight a disturbing trend: targeting people at their most vulnerable. After being injured in a motor vehicle crash, your personal information may be accessed through accident reports or other means. Some individuals or businesses may try to exploit this calling you under the guise of concern or offering services that sound beneficial but are actually self-serving or even predatory.
These calls can come from:
- Aggressive attorneys or law firms looking to sign you up fast.
- Insurance adjusters trying to minimize your claim.
- Scammers pretending to be hospital staff or family contacts.
Red Flags to Watch For:
- They pressure you to make quick decisions.
- They avoid giving you clear information about who they are.
- They ask for personal, insurance, or financial details over the phone.
- They offer “guaranteed” compensation.
Know Your Rights and Protect Yourself
If you or a loved one have recently been injured in a motor vehicle crash, here are a few steps to help protect your well-being and your future:
- Don’t feel obligated to speak to anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
- If you’re unsure whether you signed anything, consult with a trusted attorney (your choice, not theirs).
- Have a family member or friend help screen calls and paperwork if you’re still recovering.
Not every caller is a threat, but when you’re recovering, you deserve peace and protection — not pressure or manipulation. Trust your instincts. Be cautious. And remember: the right people will respect your recovery, not rush your decisions. If someone truly wants to help you, they’ll do so with transparency and patience — not business cards, bedside phone calls, or rushed paperwork while you’re medicated.
Consulting a personal injury lawyer is crucial—it can protect your rights, address your immediate needs, and make a real difference. But the decision is yours, and the timing should be too. Before speaking with any law firm, insurance company or a treatment provider, do your homework. If you’re unable, let a family member step in and ask the right questions especially if this is all new to you. It’s important to think long-term. A personal injury case can take years—so finding the right lawyer and treatment providers are key. The right decisions can wait until you’re ready. Protect yourself. Ask questions. And when in doubt, pause.
We Offer Real Conversations
Every conversation we’ve had with crash survivors teaches us something new. Every story, question, and concern help us understand what people truly need in the aftermath of a motor vehicle crash. Every story matters and we’re here to listen. We’ve heard from many crash survivors in recent months — some confused, some frustrated, and many unsure of who to trust. And we get it. When you’re recovering physically and emotionally, the last thing you need is more noise, more pressure, or more people pretending to care. If something doesn’t feel right, we’ll talk it through. If you need help understanding what happened after your crash, who contacted you, what you may have signed, or what your options are, we’re here to help you sort it out. No judgment. Just a real conversation with people who actually care.
We know it’s not easy to make a call. Maybe you don’t know what to say or maybe you’re afraid of asking the “wrong” thing. But at the Crash Support Network, there are no wrong questions. If you’ve been injured in a crash, or you’re helping someone who has, and you’re not sure what to do next, start with a conversation. The work we’re doing — listening to crash survivors, learning from every experience, and creating a space where people feel safe, informed, and supported is important.
Every Call Matters
To every crash survivor who has shared their story with us — thank you. Your trust, your honesty, and your courage are the foundation of everything we’re building. We may be a solo advisory board right now, but we’re growing with compassion and a deep respect for what you’re going through. Every call, every message, every moment you spend with us matters. We’re here to listen, we are here to learn and we are here to share our experiences. And most importantly — we’re here for you.
We’re building something real, and we’re doing it with heart. Stay safe. Stay informed. And remember, we’re just a phone call away whenever you need support.
Please note: We never reach out to motor vehicle crash survivors and/or their families. The Crash Support Network only steps in when asked and when we do, we support them with compassion, guidance, understanding and real experience.
