road trip

Summer is road trip season. Whether you’re heading to the cottage, visiting family, exploring a new destination, or enjoying a weekend getaway, roads become busier as people take advantage of the warmer weather.  For many, road trips are filled with excitement and anticipation, however for crash survivors travelling can bring additional challenges. Some may experience anxiety while riding in a vehicle, chronic pain from their injuries, fatigue, or emotional reminders of the crash that changed their lives.  No matter where your summer travels take you, making road safety a priority can help protect you, your passengers, and everyone sharing the road.  Here are some road safety tips to keep in mind this summer.

Start with Vehicle Safety

Before leaving, take time to ensure your vehicle is ready for the journey.  A well-maintained vehicle can help reduce the risk of breakdowns and mechanical issues that could contribute to a collision.

Check your:

  • Tire pressure and tread
  • Brakes
  • Oil and fluid levels
  • Windshield wipers
  • Lights
  • Battery

Plan Your Route and Your Rest Stops

Long drives can be physically and mentally demanding. Planning your route ahead of time allows you to identify rest areas, fuel stops, and alternate routes if needed.  For crash survivors, scheduled breaks can be especially important. Many survivors continue to experience pain, stiffness, headaches, fatigue, or mobility challenges long after their injuries occurred. Taking regular breaks to stretch, walk, and rest can make travelling more comfortable and safer.

Don’t Underestimate Driver Fatigue

Fatigue affects concentration, reaction time, and decision-making. In many ways, driving while exhausted can be just as dangerous as driving impaired.  If you’re tired, pull over and rest. Arriving later is always better than not arriving at all.

Signs of fatigue include:

  • Frequent yawning.
  • Difficulty focusing.
  • Missing road signs.
  • Drifting between lanes.
  • Feeling irritable or restless.

Stay Hydrated

Summer heat can quickly lead to dehydration, especially during long trips.  Drinking water throughout your journey can help maintain focus, reduce fatigue, and keep you feeling your best behind the wheel. For crash survivors managing chronic pain or certain medications, staying hydrated can be an important part of managing their overall well-being during travel.

Reduce Distractions

Road trips often involve GPS devices, music playlists, snacks, and conversations. While these can enhance the journey, they can also become distractions.  Keeping your attention on the road protects everyone around you.

Before you leave:

  • Program your GPS.
  • Set your playlist.
  • Secure loose items.
  • Put your phone away.
  • Ask passengers to help with navigation.

Share the Road Responsibly

Summer brings more motorcycles, cyclists, pedestrians, and construction crews onto our roads. Give other road users plenty of space, check blind spots carefully, obey speed limits, and remain patient in busy traffic. A few extra seconds of caution can prevent a lifetime of consequences.

For Crash Survivors: Give Yourself Grace

If you’re a crash survivor, summer travel may feel different than it once did. You may need more frequent breaks and you may feel nervous in heavy traffic or uncomfortable during long periods in a vehicle. These feelings are not uncommon.  Consider planning shorter driving days, and listening to your body’s signals. Recovery is not always linear, and it’s okay to adapt your travel plans to meet your needs.

Every Safe Journey Matters

At the Crash Support Network, we know that a motor vehicle crash can change a life in an instant. Many survivors understand firsthand how a routine drive or family vacation can become a life-altering event.  That’s why road safety is so important. Every decision we make behind the wheel whether it’s slowing down, taking a break, putting away a phone, or checking our vehicle before a trip has the potential to prevent a collision and protect lives.

This summer, make safety part of your travel plans. The destination may be important, but getting there safely is what matters most.  Because every safe journey helps create the memories that last a lifetime.
