super bowl

Super Bowl Sunday is just around the corner and millions of football fans across the country will meet up with friends to watch the game or attend Super Bowl parties. The Super Bowl is more than just a big game. It’s an annual occasion when people gather with friends and family to eat, drink and watch the game.

It is a fairly common assumption that most people want to drink during the game to feel relaxed and have a good time. However, you may be trying to recover from your collision and unsure if you are feeling up to the festivities so here are some tips to keep in mind if you are hosting or attending a super bowl party this weekend.

Tips To Keep in Mind

  • If you haven’t found adequate ways to cope or you feel as though you are in the middle of a crisis and you are attending as a guest, it is probably better to cancel and stay home to watch the big game. Friends and family will understand.
  • Have coping strategies in place in case you find yourself overwhelmed. Identify a place that you can go to decompress, and go there if needed. Find some quiet moments. Retreat to a bedroom as noise levels will be that their highest.  If you are out watching the game on the big screen, try to arrange seating at the end of the table.  That way, you can excuse yourself easily when needed and you do not have to try to engage in numerous excitable conversations that may be taking place around you.
  • Knowing how much time you will spend in advance should help to reduce anxiety. If you find that you are having fun and want to stay longer, great! If on the other hand, you don’t think that you can stay the entire time, know that it is okay to slip away early. Feel good for staying as long as you did.
  • Watch your intake of alcohol. Alcohol can become a fast friend when we are feeling anxious, stressed or simply overwhelmed. You may already be taking prescription medication for your injuries and those two substances are not a good mix.
  • Always keep in mind that your recovery and health are important so don’t overdue it!  Personally, I have to set limits because if I push myself too much one day, I can easily suffer for numerous days afterwards so you need to pace yourself.

Super Bowl Sunday is one of the biggest sporting events across the world and unfortunately it is also one of the most dangerous days on the road. We all have a responsibility to ensure we do not contribute to the problem by allowing a drunk or drugged driver to hit the road on Super Bowl Sunday.  Please make a plan! — designate a sober driver ahead of time, contact a ride-sharing service or use a taxi or public transportation.

For those of you that are watching the Big Game this Sunday whether at an establishment or at a home, enjoy yourself and be safe.
